# Adaptation Plan 1: Core Architecture Refinements
## Overview
This adaptation plan addresses the fundamental structural issues and inconsistencies identified in the network library architecture. These changes should be implemented first as they provide the foundation for other improvements.
## Changes
### 1. Fix Documentation Inconsistencies
- **Remove duplicate Phase 3 header in PLAN.md**
- Edit PLAN.md line 116-117 to remove the duplicate header
- Verify all cross-references to Phase 3 are correct
- **Standardize Implementation Phase References**
- Ensure all cross-references between phases are consistent
- Validate that all linked documents exist and are properly referenced
### 2. Standardize Event System
- **Define Universal Event System Interface**
```typescript
interface EventEmitter {
on(event: string, handler: Function): void;
off(event: string, handler: Function): void;
once(event: string, handler: Function): void;
emit(event: string, ...args: any[]): boolean;
}
```
- **Implement Core Event Emitter**
- Create a standard event emitter implementation in `src/utils/event-emitter.ts`
- Include features for:
- Event namespacing (e.g., 'node:connection', 'transport:error')
- Handler prioritization
- Asynchronous event emission options
- Debug/trace capabilities for event flow
- **Refactor Component Event Handling**
- Update NetworkNode to use the standard event system
- Modify TransportManager to use the standard event system
- Ensure all components emit standardized events
### 3. Enhance Security Integration
- **Define Security Boundaries Across Phases**
- Document security touchpoints in each implementation phase
- Create a cross-cutting security checklist for reviewers
- **Define Core Security Interfaces**
```typescript
interface IAuthenticationProvider {
authenticate(credentials: any): Promise<boolean>;
getIdentity(): any;
isAuthenticated(): boolean;
}
interface IAuthorizationProvider {
canPerformAction(action: string, resource: string): boolean;
getRoles(): string[];
}
interface IEncryptionProvider {
encrypt(data: any): Promise<any>;
decrypt(data: any): Promise<any>;
verifySignature(data: any, signature: any): Promise<boolean>;
sign(data: any): Promise<any>;
}
```
- **Update Architecture to Include Security in All Phases**
- Modify Phase 1 to include basic authentication interfaces
- Enhance Phase 2 to include transport-level security
- Update Phase 5 to include role-based access control for tier management
## Implementation Guidelines
### Event System Implementation
The standard event system should be implemented first, as it's a foundational component used by all other modules. Key implementation considerations:
1. **Memory Efficiency**
- Use weak references where appropriate to prevent memory leaks
- Implement automatic cleanup for "once" listeners
2. **Performance**
- Optimize for high-frequency events
- Consider separate fast paths for events with 0-1 listeners
3. **Debugging Support**
- Include debug mode with event tracing
- Log unhandled error events in development
### Security Integration Implementation
When implementing the security integration:
1. **Layered Approach**
- Implement security at multiple levels (transport, message, action)
- Ensure defense in depth by not relying on single security controls
2. **Pluggable Security Providers**
- Allow custom implementations of security interfaces
- Provide simple default implementations for common cases
3. **Testing**
- Create security-specific test scenarios
- Include penetration testing in the QA process
## Success Criteria
This adaptation plan is successfully implemented when:
1. All documentation inconsistencies are resolved
2. The standardized event system is implemented and used by all components
3. Security interfaces are defined and integrated across all phases
4. All existing tests pass with the new implementations
5. New tests for event system and security features achieve 100% coverage
## Dependencies
- No external dependencies, as this adaptation plan addresses core architectural elements
## Estimated Effort
- Documentation fixes: 1 person-day
- Event system standardization: 3-5 person-days
- Security integration: 5-7 person-days
