# Phase 8 Implementation Plan: Monitoring, Tracing and Simulation
## Overview
Phase 8 focuses on adding comprehensive monitoring, tracing, and simulation capabilities to the network library. These components will enhance the library's observability, debugging, and testing capabilities.
## Goals
1. Implement a flexible and efficient monitoring system for network operations
2. Add distributed tracing for performance analysis and debugging
3. Create a simulation framework for testing network scenarios
4. Integrate with the existing plugin system
5. Provide tools for analyzing network resilience and performance
## Components
### 1. Monitoring System
The monitoring system will track network metrics, node performance, and connection quality. It will:
- Collect real-time performance data from nodes and connections
- Calculate network health scores
- Track message delivery statistics
- Provide alerts for degraded performance
- Support resource-aware operation modes
**Key Classes:**
- `NetworkMonitor`: Central monitoring service that collects and processes metrics
- `MetricsCollector`: Collects metrics from various components
- `HealthAnalyzer`: Analyzes metrics to determine network health
### 2. Distributed Tracing
The distributed tracing system will provide visibility into operations that span multiple nodes. It will:
- Track message flows across the network
- Measure latency at each hop
- Identify bottlenecks and performance issues
- Support debugging of complex distributed operations
**Key Classes:**
- `NetworkTracer`: Creates and manages trace contexts
- `Span`: Represents a single unit of work in a trace
- `TraceExporter`: Exports trace data for analysis
### 3. Simulation Framework
The simulation framework will enable testing of various network scenarios. It will:
- Simulate different network topologies
- Emulate various network conditions (latency, packet loss, etc.)
- Support scenario-based testing (node failures, network partitions, etc.)
- Provide deterministic test environments
**Key Classes:**
- `NetworkSimulator`: Main simulation controller
- `SimulatedNode`: Node implementation for simulation
- `ScenarioRunner`: Orchestrates test scenarios
## Integration Approach
1. **Plugin Integration**: Components will be implemented as plugins to leverage the existing plugin architecture
2. **Non-intrusive Design**: Monitoring and tracing will have minimal overhead when not in use
3. **Resource Awareness**: All components will adapt to resource constraints
4. **Data-Driven**: Will provide rich data for analysis and visualization
## Implementation Phases
1. **Foundation**: Implement base monitoring and tracing interfaces
2. **Core Components**: Build the NetworkMonitor, NetworkTracer, and NetworkSimulator
3. **Integration**: Connect with existing components through the plugin system
4. **Scenarios**: Implement common test scenarios
5. **Documentation & Examples**: Provide usage examples and documentation
## Testing Strategy
1. Use memory transport for testing instead of mocks
2. Leverage the custom TimerController for deterministic timing tests
3. Implement specific tests for network scenarios
4. Ensure resource efficiency through performance testing
## Deliverables
1. Monitoring system implementation
2. Distributed tracing implementation
3. Simulation framework implementation
4. Integration examples
5. Comprehensive tests
6. Documentation
