Network Library Implementation Plan

Hosting Configurations
Our network architecture supports multiple hosting configurations, each with different characteristics and use cases. The detailed specifications for these configurations are available in the SERVER_FAILOVER.md document, but here's an overview of the key hosting models to be implemented:
1. Pure Client-Side Hosting (No Server)
A fully decentralized model where users host their own sessions without any server involvement:
- A user creates and hosts a session as the top-level node
- Other users connect directly to the host user
- The hierarchy organizes as more users join
- Host responsibilities can transfer to other users through voting
- All state is managed and synchronized between clients
Implementation Considerations:
- Host selection based purely on client capabilities
- State persistence without a central authority
- NAT traversal for direct client connections (handled by external transport plugins)
- Resiliency against host disconnection
2. Server-Based Hosting
A centralized model with the server as the top-level host:
- Server creates and hosts the session as the top-level node
- All clients connect through the server hierarchy
- Server maintains authoritative state
- Hierarchical organization for scalability
- Server enforces permissions and security
Implementation Considerations:
- Server as the stable root of hierarchy
- Graceful scaling as client count increases
- Server authority for conflict resolution
- Multiple server tiers for large deployments
3. Server-Initiated to Client-Hosting Failover
A hybrid model where the server starts as host but can transfer responsibilities to clients if needed:
- Server initially hosts the session
- If server disconnects, clients automatically reorganize
- Client-side hosting maintains operation during server absence
- When server returns, it smoothly reintegrates as the top-level host
- State changes during server absence are reconciled
Implementation Considerations:
- Fast detection of server disconnection
- Smooth transition to client hosting
- Efficient operation during server absence
- Clean reintegration when server returns
- State reconciliation to handle conflicts
4. Client-Initiated with Server Backup
A client-led model with server support:
- User creates and initially hosts the session
- Server joins as a participant but not the primary host
- If the hosting client disconnects or becomes unsuitable, hosting can transfer to the server
- Server provides persistence and backup capabilities
- Hybrid authority model
Implementation Considerations:
- Dynamic role switching between clients and server
- Server capability detection and utilization
- Partial authority delegation
- Flexible hosting preferences
Common Requirements Across All Models
Regardless of the hosting configuration, these capabilities must be supported:
- Dynamic host selection through voting
- Tiered hierarchy for efficient communication
- Automatic reorganization when nodes join/leave
- State synchronization across the network
- Security and permission enforcement
These hosting configurations should be considered throughout development but are especially important during:
- Phase 4 (Voting and Host Selection)
- Phase 5 (Tier Management)
- Phase 7 (State Management)
- Phase 10 (Integration Testing)

Code Coverage Strategy
To ensure 100% code coverage:
-
Statement Coverage
- Every line of code must be executed at least once during testing
- All variable assignments must be verified
- All function calls must be verified
-
Branch Coverage
- All conditional branches must be tested (if/else, switch cases)
- Both true and false conditions must be tested
- Default cases must be tested
-
Function Coverage
- All functions must be called at least once
- All function parameters must be tested with valid and invalid values
- Return values must be verified
-
Line Coverage
- All executable lines must be executed during testing
- Empty lines and comments don't count
Implementation Guidelines
- Start Simple: Begin with the simplest implementation that passes tests
- Refactor Incrementally: Improve code quality in small, tested steps
- Handle Edge Cases: Always include tests for boundary conditions
- Document as You Go: Add JSDoc comments to all public APIs
- Review Each Phase: Before moving to the next phase, review code quality and test coverage
Development Workflow
- Review the pseudo-code file you're implementing
- Write tests first based on expected behavior
- Implement the minimal code to pass tests
- Refactor for clarity and performance
- Add edge case tests and implementations
- Document the completed component
- Review and move to the next component
This phased approach ensures we build a robust, well-tested system that implements the complete architectural vision while maintaining code quality and test coverage.
