# Adaptation Plan 2: API Stability and Transport Framework Enhancement
## Overview
This adaptation plan addresses API versioning strategy, transport plugin framework enhancements, and related documentation improvements. These changes build upon the core refinements in ADAPT_1.md and establish patterns for long-term library maintenance and extensibility.
## Changes
### 1. Establish API Versioning Strategy
- **Define API Stability Policy**
- Add new file `API_STABILITY.md` documenting:
- Semantic versioning implementation
- Stability guarantees by component
- Deprecation process and timelines
- Migration assistance approach
- **Implement Version Identification**
```typescript
// Add to core interfaces
interface INetworkNode {
// Existing members
readonly apiVersion: string;
readonly implementationVersion: string;
isCompatibleWith(minVersion: string, maxVersion?: string): boolean;
}
```
- **Add API Evolution Support**
- Implement backward compatibility layers
- Add runtime feature detection
- Create compatibility shims for major version transitions
### 2. Enhance Transport Plugin Framework
- **Create Transport Plugin Development Kit**
- Add new directory `src/transport/pdk/` containing:
- Base classes and interfaces for transport implementations
- Utility methods for common transport operations
- Testing harnesses for transport compliance
- **Define Transport Plugin Interface**
```typescript
interface ITransportPlugin {
readonly id: string;
readonly version: string;
readonly capabilities: TransportCapabilities;
initialize(options: any): Promise<void>;
createTransport(nodeId: string, config: TransportConfig): ITransport;
// Lifecycle hooks
onRegister(): void;
onUnregister(): void;
}
interface TransportCapabilities {
supportsDirect: boolean;
supportsRelay: boolean;
supportsBroadcast: boolean;
supportsP2P: boolean;
maxMessageSize: number;
reliabilityLevel: 'unreliable' | 'partial' | 'reliable';
metadataCapacity: number;
// Additional transport-specific capabilities
}
```
- **Add Transport Conformance Testing Tools**
- Create test suite for validating transport implementations
- Implement benchmarking tools for transport performance
- Add simulation tools for testing transport behavior under various conditions
### 3. Create Reference Transport Implementations
- **Memory Transport Enhancements**
- Update `MemoryTransport` to fully implement the new plugin interface
- Add comprehensive testing to serve as a reference for plugin developers
- Improve simulation capabilities for realistic network conditions
- **Transport Plugin Documentation**
- Create `TRANSPORT_PLUGIN_GUIDE.md` with:
- Step-by-step guide for creating new transport plugins
- Best practices for transport implementation
- Performance optimization guidelines
- Security considerations for transport developers
### 4. API Documentation Improvements
- **Generate Comprehensive API Documentation**
- Add JSDoc comments to all public interfaces
- Create TypeScript definition files with detailed comments
- Include usage examples for each major component
- **Create API Migration Guides**
- Document migration path between versions
- Provide upgrade scripts for common scenarios
- Include compatibility matrices for different versions
## Implementation Guidelines
### API Versioning Implementation
When implementing the API versioning strategy:
1. **Version Granularity**
- Define versioning at both library and component levels
- Use semver (MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH) consistently
- Include build metadata for development versions
2. **Compatibility Checking**
- Implement runtime version compatibility verification
- Add compile-time type checks for TypeScript users
- Provide clear error messages for version mismatches
3. **Stability Classifications**
- Classify APIs as:
- Stable: Guaranteed backward compatibility
- Experimental: May change between minor versions
- Internal: Not intended for direct use
### Transport Plugin Framework Implementation
For the transport plugin framework:
1. **Abstraction Balance**
- Create abstractions that are high-level enough to support various transports
- Keep low-level details accessible for performance optimization
- Provide escape hatches for transport-specific features
2. **Testing Approach**
- Create automated conformance tests
- Include performance benchmark suite
- Add chaos testing for reliability verification
3. **Plugin Discovery**
- Implement plugin registration mechanism
- Add runtime capability discovery
- Support dynamic loading where appropriate
## Success Criteria
This adaptation plan is successfully implemented when:
1. API versioning strategy is documented and implemented
2. Transport plugin framework is enhanced with PDK
3. Reference documentation for transport plugin development is complete
4. API documentation is comprehensive and includes migration guides
5. All automated tests for transport conformance pass
## Dependencies
- Depends on core architectural refinements from ADAPT_1.md
- Requires standardized event system implementation
