# Phase 7: Advanced State Management
## Overview
Phase 7 implements a comprehensive state synchronization system with robust conflict resolution capabilities. Building on the foundation of the old implementation, this phase adds sophisticated state management that can handle complex data structures, efficient delta compression, and granular conflict resolution at the individual property level.
## Key Components
### 1. StateManager
The StateManager is responsible for storing, synchronizing, and reconciling state across the network.
#### Key Features
- **State History Tracking**: Maintaining a history of state changes
- **Validation**: Verifying state integrity before applying changes
- **Conflict Detection**: Identifying conflicts between concurrent updates
- **Path-specific Resolution**: Resolving conflicts at the property level
- **Event Notifications**: Informing subscribers of state changes
#### Implementation Requirements
The StateManager should:
- Maintain a versioned history of state changes
- Support partial (delta) updates for bandwidth efficiency
- Provide configurable validation for incoming state updates
- Implement multiple conflict resolution strategies
- Support state reconciliation with customizable rules
- Allow registration of state change subscribers
- Track performance metrics and optimization opportunities
### 2. BitPackerCompressor
The BitPackerCompressor provides efficient compression for state objects, particularly useful for bandwidth-constrained environments.
#### Key Features
- **Schema-based Compression**: Using known data structures to optimize compression
- **Delta Compression**: Only sending changed properties
- **Binary Representation**: Compact binary format for efficient transfer
- **Type-aware Encoding**: Optimizing encoding based on data types
#### Implementation Requirements
The BitPackerCompressor should:
- Support schema definition for optimized compression
- Implement efficient delta detection and compression
- Provide binary encoding/decoding with minimal overhead
- Handle complex nested data structures
- Track compression statistics for optimization purposes
### 3. StateReconciler
The StateReconciler resolves conflicts between different versions of state in a deterministic way.
#### Key Features
- **Multiple Reconciliation Strategies**: Supporting different approaches to conflict resolution
- **Path-specific Resolution**: Applying different strategies based on data path
- **Timestamp-based Reconciliation**: Using timestamps to resolve conflicts
- **Custom Merge Functions**: Supporting application-specific merge logic
#### Implementation Requirements
The StateReconciler should:
- Support multiple built-in reconciliation strategies:
- Latest wins (based on timestamp)
- Remote wins (always choose remote state)
- Local wins (always choose local state)
- Deep merge (combine non-conflicting properties)
- Custom (application-provided reconciliation)
- Allow path-specific strategy configuration
- Detect and report conflicts at a granular level
- Provide deterministic outcomes for the same inputs

## Integration Points
### Integration with NetworkNode
The state management system integrates with the NetworkNode class:
1. **Local State Storage**: Nodes maintain their portion of the application state
2. **State Change Propagation**: Changes are propagated through the hierarchy
3. **Conflict Resolution**: Conflicts are resolved when divergent states are encountered
4. **State Transfer**: New nodes receive the current state when joining
### Integration with Message System
The state updates are transmitted via the message system:
1. **Delta Messages**: Bandwidth-efficient state change messages
2. **Full State Messages**: Complete state synchronization messages
3. **State Request Messages**: Messages requesting state from other nodes
4. **Priority Handling**: State messages may have different priorities based on content
## Implementation Guidelines
### Performance Considerations
1. **Delta Efficiency**: Optimize delta calculation to minimize size
2. **Compression Overhead**: Balance compression ratio with CPU usage
3. **Reconciliation Performance**: Optimize conflict detection for large states
4. **History Management**: Efficiently manage state history to avoid memory issues
### Edge Cases to Handle
1. **Concurrent Updates**: Handle multiple simultaneous updates gracefully
2. **Network Partitions**: Reconcile divergent states after network partitions
3. **Partial Updates**: Handle incomplete or interrupted state transfers
4. **Schema Evolution**: Support changes to the state schema over time
5. **Invalid States**: Detect and reject invalid state updates
