## Phase 6 Goals
Phase 6 transforms the network library into a plugin-based architecture with these goals:
1. **Core Modularity**: Create a minimal core with well-defined extension points
2. **Plugin Infrastructure**: Build a robust system for plugin registration, lifecycle, and management
3. **Security and Isolation**: Ensure plugins cannot compromise system stability or security
4. **Resource Management**: Monitor and control plugin resource consumption
5. **First-Party Plugins**: Implement essential plugins that demonstrate the architecture
6. **Developer Experience**: Create tools and documentation for plugin developers
7. **Backward Compatibility**: Maintain compatibility with previous phases
## Plugin System Architecture
The plugin system architecture is built around these key components:
### Foundational Interfaces
```typescript
// Core plugin interface
interface IPlugin {
readonly id: string;
readonly version: string;
onRegister(context: PluginContext): void;
onUnregister(): void;
initialize?(): Promise<void>;
shutdown?(): Promise<void>;
configure?(config: unknown): void;
getCapabilities?(): PluginCapability[];
getExtensions?(): Record<string, unknown>;
}
// Plugin manifest
interface PluginManifest {
id: string;
version: string;
name: string;
description?: string;
author?: string;
dependencies?: PluginDependency[];
capabilities?: PluginCapability[];
extensions?: Record<string, unknown>;
}
// Plugin context provided to each plugin
interface PluginContext {
getPlugin<T extends IPlugin>(id: string): T | undefined;
events: EventEmitter;
getExtensionPoint<T>(id: string): ExtensionPoint<T> | undefined;
logger: PluginLogger;
config: ReadonlyConfig;
}
// Extension point definition
interface ExtensionPoint<T> {
id: string;
getExtensions(): T[];
addExtension(extension: T): void;
removeExtension(extension: T): void;
}
```
### Class Hierarchy
The system implements these primary classes:
1. **PluginManager** - Main entry point for plugin operations
2. **PluginRegistry** - Stores and manages plugin metadata
3. **PluginLoader** - Handles plugin loading and initialization
4. **SecurityVerifier** - Validates plugin security
5. **ResourceMonitor** - Tracks plugin resource usage
6. **ExtensionPointRegistry** - Manages extension points
## Core Components

```typescript
class PluginManager {
constructor(options?: PluginManagerOptions);
// Registration
register(plugin: IPlugin): boolean;
unregister(pluginId: string): boolean;
// Lifecycle management
initialize(): Promise<void>;
shutdown(): Promise<void>;
// Plugin access
getPlugin<T extends IPlugin>(id: string): T | undefined;
getAllPlugins(): IPlugin[];
getPluginsByType<T extends IPlugin>(type: string): T[];
// Extension points
getExtensionPoint<T>(id: string): ExtensionPoint<T> | undefined;
registerExtensionPoint<T>(id: string, schema: ExtensionPointSchema): ExtensionPoint<T>;
}
class PluginRegistry {
constructor();
// Registration
add(plugin: IPlugin, manifest: PluginManifest): boolean;
remove(pluginId: string): boolean;
// Plugin lookup
getById(pluginId: string): RegisteredPlugin | undefined;
getByDependency(dependency: PluginDependency): RegisteredPlugin[];
getAll(): RegisteredPlugin[];
// Dependency management
resolveDependencies(pluginId: string): DependencyResolutionResult;
The system defines these key extension points:
### 1. Transport Extension Point
Allows custom transport implementations:
```typescript
interface TransportExtension {
readonly id: string;
readonly capabilities: TransportCapability[];
createTransport(options: TransportOptions): ITransport;
}
// Registration
const transportExtensionPoint = pluginManager.registerExtensionPoint<TransportExtension>(
'network:transport',
transportExtensionSchema
);
// Usage
const transports = transportExtensionPoint.getExtensions();
const webRtcTransport = transports.find(t => t.id === 'webrtc-transport');
```
### 2. Message Processing Pipeline
Enables message transformation and validation:
```typescript
interface MessageProcessor {
readonly priority: number;
process(message: Message): Message | null;
}
// Registration
const messageProcessorExtensionPoint = pluginManager.registerExtensionPoint<MessageProcessor>(
'network:message-processor',
messageProcessorSchema
);
// Usage
const processors = messageProcessorExtensionPoint.getExtensions()
.sort((a, b) => a.priority - b.priority);
let message = /* original message */;
for (const processor of processors) {
message = processor.process(message);
if (!message) break; // Message filtered out
}
```
### 3. Tier Management Strategies
Allows custom tier organization strategies:
```typescript
interface TierStrategy {
readonly id: string;
readonly name: string;
isApplicable(context: TierContext): boolean;
optimize(structure: TierStructure): TierStructure;
}
// Registration
const tierStrategyExtensionPoint = pluginManager.registerExtensionPoint<TierStrategy>(
'network:tier-strategy',
tierStrategySchema
);
// Usage
const strategies = tierStrategyExtensionPoint.getExtensions();
const applicableStrategies = strategies.filter(s => s.isApplicable(context));
const selectedStrategy = selectBestStrategy(applicableStrategies);
const optimizedStructure = selectedStrategy.optimize(currentStructure);
```
### 4. State Synchronization Extensions
Customizes state handling:
```typescript
interface StateExtension {
readonly id: string;
serializeState(path: string, state: unknown): SerializedState;
deserializeState(path: string, serialized: SerializedState): unknown;
resolveConflict(path: string, local: unknown, remote: unknown): unknown;
}
// Registration
const stateExtensionPoint = pluginManager.registerExtensionPoint<StateExtension>(
'network:state-extension',
stateExtensionSchema
);
// Usage
const extensions = stateExtensionPoint.getExtensions();
const handler = extensions.find(e => e.id === 'complex-object-handler');
const serialized = handler.serializeState('game.player', playerState);
```
### 5. Network Monitoring Extensions
Adds custom monitoring capabilities:
```typescript
interface MonitoringExtension {
readonly id: string;
readonly metrics: MonitoringMetric[];
collectMetrics(): MetricsCollection;
analyzeMetrics(metrics: MetricsCollection): MetricsAnalysis;
}
// Registration
const monitoringExtensionPoint = pluginManager.registerExtensionPoint<MonitoringExtension>(
'network:monitoring-extension',
monitoringExtensionSchema
);
// Usage
const extensions = monitoringExtensionPoint.getExtensions();
const metricCollections = extensions.map(e => e.collectMetrics());
const combinedMetrics = combineMetrics(metricCollections);
```
## Integration with Previous Phases
Phase 6 integrates with Phase 5 components through extension points:
### 1. Enhanced Tier Manager Integration
```typescript
class EnhancedTierManager {
constructor(options: TierManagerOptions) {
// Original initialization
// Phase 6 integration
if (options.pluginManager) {
this.pluginManager = options.pluginManager;
this.tierStrategyExtensionPoint = this.pluginManager.getExtensionPoint('network:tier-strategy');
this.monitoringExtensionPoint = this.pluginManager.getExtensionPoint('network:monitoring-extension');
this.setupPluginIntegration();
}
}
private setupPluginIntegration() {
// Register for plugin events
this.pluginManager.events.on('plugin:registered', this.handlePluginRegistered);
this.pluginManager.events.on('plugin:unregistered', this.handlePluginUnregistered);
// Initialize with existing plugins
const plugins = this.pluginManager.getAllPlugins();
plugins.forEach(this.integratePlugin);
}
// Use plugin-provided strategies
optimizeTierStructure() {
if (this.tierStrategyExtensionPoint) {
const strategies = this.tierStrategyExtensionPoint.getExtensions();
if (strategies.length > 0) {
const strategy = this.selectStrategy(strategies);
return strategy.optimize(this.getCurrentTierStructure());
}
}
// Fall back to built-in optimization
return this.defaultOptimizeTierStructure();
}
}
```
### 2. Resource Balancer Integration
Integrates with the resource management plugin:
```typescript
class ResourceBalancer {
constructor(options: ResourceBalancerOptions) {
// Original initialization
// Phase 6 integration
if (options.pluginManager) {
this.pluginManager = options.pluginManager;
this.resourcePlugin = this.pluginManager.getPlugin<ResourceManagementPlugin>('resource-management-plugin');
if (this.resourcePlugin) {
this.setupResourceIntegration();
}
}
}
private setupResourceIntegration() {
// Use resource plugin for advanced metrics
this.resourcePlugin.onThresholdExceeded(this.handleResourceThresholdExceeded);
}
// Use plugin for resource optimization
optimizeResourceAllocation() {
if (this.resourcePlugin) {
const utilization = this.resourcePlugin.getResourceUtilization();
const suggestions = this.resourcePlugin.suggestOptimizations();
return this.applyOptimizationSuggestions(suggestions);
}
// Fall back to built-in optimization
return this.defaultOptimizeResourceAllocation();
}
}
```
### 3. Tier Partition Handler Integration
Enhances partition handling with network condition simulation:
```typescript
class TierPartitionHandler {
constructor(options: TierPartitionHandlerOptions) {
// Original initialization
// Phase 6 integration
if (options.pluginManager) {
this.pluginManager = options.pluginManager;
this.networkConditionPlugin = this.pluginManager.getPlugin<NetworkConditionPlugin>('network-condition-plugin');
if (this.networkConditionPlugin) {
this.setupNetworkSimulation();
}
}
}
private setupNetworkSimulation() {
// Use network condition plugin for testing
this.canSimulatePartitions = true;
}
// Test partition detection and recovery
simulatePartition(partitionOptions: PartitionOptions) {
if (this.networkConditionPlugin) {
this.networkConditionPlugin.setPartitioned(true);
this.timerController.setTimeout(() => {
this.networkConditionPlugin.setPartitioned(false);
}, partitionOptions.durationMs);
return true;
}
return false;
}
}

## Developer Tools and Documentation
### 1. Plugin Development Kit
A comprehensive toolkit for plugin developers:
```typescript
class PluginDevelopmentKit {
// Plugin scaffolding
createPluginScaffold(options: PluginScaffoldOptions): string; // Returns directory path
// Testing
createPluginTestHarness(plugin: IPlugin): PluginTestHarness;
// Validation
validatePlugin(plugin: IPlugin): ValidationResult;
// Documentation
generatePluginDocumentation(plugin: IPlugin): PluginDocumentation;
}
```
### 2. Plugin Documentation Generator
Creates comprehensive documentation:
```typescript
class PluginDocumentationGenerator {
// Generate full documentation
generateDocumentation(options: DocumentationOptions): void;
// Generate specific sections
generateApiReference(plugin: IPlugin): ApiReference;
generateUsageGuide(plugin: IPlugin): UsageGuide;
generateExamples(plugin: IPlugin): Examples;
}
```
### 3. Plugin Debugging Tools
Specialized debugging for plugin development:
```typescript
class PluginDebugger {
// Attach to running plugins
attach(pluginId: string): DebugSession;
// Monitoring
monitorEvents(pluginId: string): EventMonitor;
// Inspection
inspectPluginState(pluginId: string): StateInspector;
// Troubleshooting
diagnosePluginIssue(pluginId: string, symptom: string): DiagnosisResult;
}
```

## Testing Strategy
Testing uses these approaches:
### 1. Unit Testing
Each plugin component is tested in isolation:
```typescript
describe('PluginManager', () => {
let pluginManager: PluginManager;
let mockPlugin: IPlugin;
beforeEach(() => {
mockPlugin = createMockPlugin('test-plugin');
pluginManager = new PluginManager();
});
it('should register plugins correctly', () => {
const result = pluginManager.register(mockPlugin);
expect(result).toBe(true);
expect(pluginManager.getPlugin('test-plugin')).toBe(mockPlugin);
});
// More tests...
});
```
### 2. Integration Testing
Test plugin interactions with system components:
```typescript
describe('Plugin Integration', () => {
let networkSystem: NetworkSystem;
let pluginManager: PluginManager;
beforeEach(async () => {
// Use the TimerController instead of Jest timers
const timerController = TimerController.createInstance();
networkSystem = createNetworkSystem({ timerController });
pluginManager = new PluginManager({ networkSystem, timerController });
// Register plugins
pluginManager.register(new NetworkConditionPlugin());
pluginManager.register(new SecurityPlugin());
// Initialize
await pluginManager.initialize();
});
it('should enhance network system with plugin capabilities', () => {
// Get plugin
const networkConditionPlugin = pluginManager.getPlugin<NetworkConditionPlugin>('network-condition-plugin');
// Use plugin feature
networkConditionPlugin.setLatency(100);
// Test effect on network
// - Use memory transport instead of mocks
const result = testNetworkLatency(networkSystem);
expect(result.averageLatency).toBeCloseTo(100, 10);
});
// More tests...
});
```
### 3. Security Testing
Validate plugin isolation and security:
```typescript
describe('Plugin Security', () => {
let securityVerifier: SecurityVerifier;
let maliciousPlugin: IPlugin;
beforeEach(() => {
securityVerifier = new SecurityVerifier();
maliciousPlugin = createMaliciousPlugin();
});
it('should reject plugins with excessive permissions', () => {
const result = securityVerifier.verify(maliciousPlugin);
expect(result.verified).toBe(false);
expect(result.issues).toContain('Requested system access not permitted');
});
it('should sandbox plugin execution', () => {
const sandbox = securityVerifier.createSecureContext(validPlugin);
expect(() => sandbox.executeUnsafeCode()).toThrow();
});
// More tests...
});
```
### 4. Performance Testing
Measure plugin system overhead:
```typescript
describe('Plugin Performance', () => {
let baseNetworkSystem: NetworkSystem;
let pluginEnabledSystem: NetworkSystem;
beforeEach(async () => {
baseNetworkSystem = createNetworkSystem();
pluginEnabledSystem = createNetworkSystem();
const pluginManager = new PluginManager({ networkSystem: pluginEnabledSystem });
// Register multiple plugins
for (let i = 0; i < 10; i++) {
pluginManager.register(createTestPlugin(`test-plugin-${i}`));
}
await pluginManager.initialize();
});
it('should have acceptable overhead with multiple plugins', () => {
const baseResult = measureOperationTime(() => baseNetworkSystem.sendMessage());
const pluginResult = measureOperationTime(() => pluginEnabledSystem.sendMessage());
// Should have less than 10% overhead
expect(pluginResult.time / baseResult.time).toBeLessThan(1.1);
});
// More tests...
});
```
## Performance Considerations
1. **Lazy Loading**: Plugins are initialized only when needed
2. **Efficient Extension Point Implementation**: Minimal overhead for extension points
3. **Resource Usage Monitoring**: Automatic throttling of resource-intensive plugins
4. **Optimized Event Dispatch**: Event filtering to reduce unnecessary processing
5. **Caching Strategies**: Results of plugin operations are cached when appropriate
These optimizations ensure the plugin system adds minimal overhead while providing maximum flexibility.
