## Introduction and Background
The Network Library provides a hierarchical, resilient networking infrastructure. Two critical components are currently missing or incomplete:
1. **Relay Module**: Enables indirect communication between nodes that cannot directly connect
2. **Security Module**: Provides authentication, encryption, and access control
This implementation plan addresses these gaps with a particular focus on tier awareness and integration with the existing architecture.
## Current State Assessment
### Relay Module
**Current State**: Not implemented
- Only has types.ts with interfaces and an index.ts that exports them
- Missing core components like RelayConnectionManager, RelaySelector, etc.
### Security Module
**Current State**: Partially implemented
- Has types.ts with security interfaces and an index.ts
- Has a minimal SecurityPlugin implementation with placeholder methods
- Missing comprehensive security framework

test('should respect connection timeout configuration', async () => {...});
});

test('should encrypt and decrypt messages correctly', async () => {...});
test('should handle key rotation properly', async () => {...});
test('should detect tampered messages', async () => {...});
test('should respect encryption algorithm preferences', async () => {...});
});
```
### 2. Integration Testing
test('should route messages through relay when direct connection fails', async () => {...});
test('should select optimal relay path based on metrics', async () => {...});
test('should failover to alternative relay path when primary fails', async () => {...});
});
// security-middleware-integration.spec.ts
describe('Security and Middleware Integration', () => {
test('should apply security processing in middleware pipeline', async () => {...});
test('should handle encrypted messages in middleware chain', async () => {...});
});
```
### 3. Tier-Aware Testing

describe('Tier-Aware Relay Functionality', () => {
test('should relay messages up the tier hierarchy to common ancestor and down to target', async () => {...});
test('should broadcast messages to all nodes across all tiers', async () => {...});
test('should select optimal relay path considering tier hierarchy', async () => {...});
test('should handle relay node failures at higher tiers gracefully', async () => {...});
});

test('should maintain security context across tier boundaries', async () => {...});
test('should validate credentials at tier crossing points', async () => {...});

});
```
