# Modular Architecture Implementation Plan
## Overview
This document integrates the modular architecture approach (from MODULAR_ARCHITECTURE.md) with the enhanced implementation plan (PLAN_ENHANCED.md) and details from the phase-specific implementation documents. It provides a comprehensive roadmap for implementing a modular, plugin-based network library that keeps core components lightweight while allowing for extensive functionality through plugins.

## Core Modular Architecture Principles
### 1. Minimal Core
The core library contains only essential functionality without which the network cannot operate:
- **NetworkNode**: Basic node implementation with minimal features
- **Transport Abstraction**: Interface and minimal implementation for message passing
- **Basic Routing**: Essential message routing without advanced features
- **Plugin System**: Infrastructure to support plugins
- **Type Definitions**: Shared type definitions and interfaces
### 2. Plugin-Based Extensions
All non-essential features are implemented as plugins:
- **Transport Plugins**: Support for different transport mechanisms (WebRTC, WebSocket, etc.)
- **Feature Plugins**: Add new capabilities (state management, voting, metrics, etc.)
- **Integration Plugins**: Connect with other frameworks (React, Vue, Angular, etc.)
### 3. Implementation Principles
The following principles guide the implementation:
1. **Phase-based Development**: Implementation in logical phases, each building on the previous
2. **Test-driven Development**: 100% code coverage with Jest tests
3. **Incremental Refinement**: Fully flesh out specific modules before moving to the next
4. **Security by Design**: Security considerations integrated throughout all phases
5. **Performance Optimization**: Performance considered from the beginning
6. **Internationalization Support**: Global usage patterns accommodated from the start
7. **Developer Experience**: Tools and documentation developed alongside code
8. **Library Reuse**: Leverage existing libraries rather than rebuilding functionality
## Modular Package Structure

## Plugin System Implementation Details
**`From PHASE_6.md`**
### Plugin Registry
The plugin registry manages plugin registration and lifecycle:
```typescript
class PluginRegistry {
private _plugins: Map<string, IPlugin>;
private _entity: any; // The entity (node) this registry belongs to
constructor(entity: any) {
this._plugins = new Map();
this._entity = entity;
}
register(plugin: IPlugin): boolean {
// Check if plugin with this ID already exists
// Register the plugin
// Call onRegister
// Return success/failure
}
unregister(pluginId: string): boolean {
// Find the plugin
// Call onUnregister
// Remove from registry
// Return success/failure
}
getPlugin<T extends IPlugin>(pluginId: string): T | undefined {
// Return the plugin if it exists, undefined otherwise
}
hasPlugin(pluginId: string): boolean {
// Check if plugin exists
}
getAllPlugins(): IPlugin[] {
// Return all registered plugins
}
}
```
### Plugin Lifecycle
Plugins follow this lifecycle:
1. **Creation**: Plugin instance is created
2. **Configuration**: Plugin is configured with options
3. **Registration**: Plugin is registered with a node
4. **Initialization**: Plugin initializes its resources
5. **Operation**: Plugin operates as part of the node
6. **Shutdown**: Plugin cleans up when disabled
7. **Unregistration**: Plugin is removed from the node
### Core Plugin Categories

## Transport Plugin Framework Details
**`From PHASE_2.md and ADAPT_2.md`**
### Transport Interfaces
The transport interfaces define the contract that all transport implementations must follow:
```typescript
interface ITransport {
readonly id: string;
readonly state: TransportState;
connect(options?: ConnectionOptions): Promise<void>;
disconnect(): Promise<void>;
sendTo(recipient: string, message: any): Promise<void>;
getStats(): TransportStats;
on(event: string, handler: Function): void;
off(event: string, handler: Function): void;
}
```
### Transport Plugin Development Kit
The Transport Plugin Development Kit (PDK) provides:
1. **Base Classes**: Abstract implementations for common functionality
2. **Testing Utilities**: Tools for validating transport implementations
3. **Simulation Helpers**: Utilities for simulating network conditions
4. **Documentation**: Comprehensive guides for plugin developers
### Transport Capability Discovery
The enhanced transport framework supports:
1. **Capability Reporting**: Transports report their capabilities
2. **Automatic Selection**: System selects transport based on requirements
3. **Failover Strategies**: Fallback mechanisms if preferred transport fails
4. **Performance Monitoring**: Transport performance tracking for optimization
## Integration with Existing Libraries
**`From MODULAR_ARCHITECTURE.md and LIBRARY_INTEGRATION.md`**
Each plugin can integrate with appropriate libraries while keeping them encapsulated:
1. **Core Package**:
- Use `@suaveplan/events` for the event system
- Keep other libraries as optional peer dependencies
2. **Transport Plugins**:
- WebRTC/WebSocket specific implementations
- Crypto functionality for secure transports
3. **State Plugin**:
- Leverage `@suaveplan/bitpacker` for serialization
- Keep this as an optional feature
4. **Security Plugin**:
- Use `@suaveplan/crypto` and `@suaveplan/keys`
- Implement session ownership and encryption
## Loading Mechanisms
To support dynamic loading of plugins:
1. **Plugin Registry**:
```typescript
// Core plugin system
class PluginRegistry {
register(plugin: IPlugin): void {
// Registration logic
}
}
// Application code
import { NetworkCore } from '@suaveplan/network-core';
import { StatePlugin } from '@suaveplan/network-state';
const network = new NetworkCore();
network.plugins.register(new StatePlugin());
```
2. **Conditional Imports**:
```typescript
// For environments that support dynamic imports
async function loadSecurityIfNeeded() {
if (config.securityEnabled) {
const { SecurityPlugin } = await import('@suaveplan/network-security');
network.plugins.register(new SecurityPlugin());
}
}
```
3. **Feature Detection**:
```typescript
class NetworkCore {
hasFeature(featureId: string): boolean {
return this.plugins.has(featureId);
}
// Method to safely use optional features
withFeature<T>(featureId: string, callback: (feature: any) => T, fallback: T): T {
if (this.hasFeature(featureId)) {
return callback(this.plugins.get(featureId));
}
return fallback;
}
}
```
## Bundle Size Optimization
### Core Size Target
The core package should aim for:
- < 20KB minified
- < 5KB gzipped
### Dependency Management
#### Minimal Core Dependencies
The core should have minimal dependencies:
- `@suaveplan/events` (essential for event handling)
- TypeScript types and utilities
#### Optional Peer Dependencies
Plugins should list their dependencies as peer dependencies:
```json
{
"name": "@suaveplan/network-state",
"peerDependencies": {
"@suaveplan/network-core": "^1.0.0",
"@suaveplan/bitpacker": "^1.0.0"
},
"peerDependenciesMeta": {
"@suaveplan/bitpacker": {
"optional": true
}
}
}
```
## Migration Path
For users who start with the full bundle and want to optimize later:
1. **Analysis Tools**: Tools to analyze which plugins are actually used
2. **Gradual Migration**: Support incremental migration to cherry-picked plugins
3. **Shim Layer**: Compatibility layer during migration
## Conclusion
By adopting this modular architecture implementation plan, the network library provides both simplicity for basic use cases and power for advanced applications:
- **Minimal Bundle Size**: Core remains lightweight and focused
- **Feature Richness**: Plugins provide extended functionality
- **Flexibility**: Users choose only the features they need
- **Maintainability**: Clear separation of concerns
- **Developer Experience**: Comprehensive tools and documentation
This approach enables:
- Small bundle sizes for simple applications
- Full featured capabilities when needed
- Maximum flexibility for different use cases
- Better maintainability and testing
- Clear separation of concerns
The implementation phases outlined in PLAN_ENHANCED.md, with special focus on Phase 6 (Plugin System), provide a clear roadmap for transforming the architectural vision into a modular, extensible reality.
